11 Bit Studios has lifted the curtain on the sequel to its acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated, Frostpunk, dropping an announcement trailer earlier this week. The announcement came via Twitter, in a Tweet with the hashtag #SnowBloodOil with coal-burning set to give way to a new resource, oil!
Frostpunk 2 takes place some 30 years after the mega-blizzard, which arrives at the end of the original Frostpunk campaign. A brutal real-time strategy/survival campaign not for the faint of heart. It’s truly a survival game, even on the lower difficulties.
“In Frostpunk’s successor, players are once again tasked with playing as the leader of a resource-hungry metropolis where the expansion and search for new sources of power is an unavoidable reality,” reads the announcement. “But the apocalyptic world has moved on. After the age of coal, conquering Frostland for the oil extraction industry is expected to be the new salvation of what’s left of humanity.”

The sequel is going to focus on how humanity would survive after surviving the unsurvivable. Not just as an individual but as a society.
Familiar mechanics around factions are set to return, with a far larger scale than the first title. However, a release date has yet to be set, with the games co-director Jakyb Stakalski stating the title was early in development during an interview with PC Gamer.
I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the first game, and I’ll be keen to sink my teeth into a broader challenge in Frostpunk 2.
